What you Should Know About Prison Psychology

The biggest that many is imagining themselves or their loved ones in prison. In prison, you have do not have a right to make any decisions of your own including what to eat at what time and what time to sleep as you are governed but rules and regulations. Prisoners experience tough times while in prison some even become traumatized and this explains why many of them have mental problems when they are released. With that said, the following are some things that affect the prison psychology.

The first effect that many people get when they are in and out of prison is that they are not the same people. Many people say that people do not change and that is not true. It will also be wrong for you to say that after childhood, someones personality cannot change. But one important thing that you need to know about personalities is that they change according to the kind of experience that you have. According to research done, having a long term imprisonment sentence can change the person that you are. Even prisoners that have served a short term sentence lets say few months in prison do not come out of the institution as the same person they went in.

The other effect of prison psychology is being paranoia about other people. When you are sent to prison, you are likely to meet different prisoners who have committed different acts and this can be so hard for you as a new prisoner. You are also likely to experience the constant fear of violence and abuse from other inmates. It is for this reason that it totally impossible for you to feel safe when you are sent to prison. After the such an experience, once the prisoner is released, they struggle with relationships and trust issues. This condition is known as chronic paranoia.

Becoming dependent to rules are routines is the other effect of prison psychology. This is because, when you are in prison, you are governed by rules. Prisoners get attached to these rules and some of them are not able to operate without them once they have been released.

The last effect of prison psychology is emotional numbing. With the event of constant violence and threats when they are in prison, it means that these prisoners cannot show that they are emotionally vulnerable no matter how scared they are. When you are in prison, you have to demonstrate how strong you are to dissuade other inmates from harming you. As a result, once you are released for prison, it becomes hard for you to express yourself emotionally as this kind of experience makes you hard and more distant. You are also likely to suffer from a condition known as extreme low neuroticism where you do not have feelings for other people.
